The Adaptive Mindset for Resilience Model
Removing stress from the workplace and life is unrealistic, but improving the way people deal with and respond to change improves performance. Humans are hard-wired to focus on negative, threatening information. There is a mechanism at work in our brains, called the Negativity Bias. It causes unproductive thoughts that limit our performance and causes us stress. This limits our ability to adapt to change and respond productively to adversity. Fortunately, these fall into distinctive patterns that, with practice, can be recognized and interrupted.
Research shows that 91% of the things we worry about don’t happen. And most of the time, when our fears do come true, things work out better than expected. The Negativity Bias causes us to expend energy when we would be better served using that energy productively. Resiliency training enhances engagement by showing people how to recognize and overcome their negativity bias. People learn a process of challenging their automatic negative thoughts and then finding more productive ways to think and behave during difficult times. Instead of feeling paralyzed, people learn strategies to adapt and interpret events more realistically, which leads to empowerment and control over their thoughts and actions.
